The first thing you want to figure out is what type of foot do you have. Take a look at a pair of worn shoes you may have lying around and notice the wear pattern on the sole for hints as as to where you may need the most support. Flat footed women have a tendency to roll their foot in when working out. If this is you, then purchase a running shoe that offers you stability. Look for shoes that have features like "motion control" or "stability control".
If your foot happens to have a high arch, then you may notice that your ankle has a tendency to roll out when running. To correct this, you'll want a pair of women's running shoes that offer cushion in the sole so that it will absorb the impact when running.
Once you've determined the type of foot you have, you'll be able to narrow down the choices when selecting the right women's running shoe. You'll want to also determine what extra features you may want in your shoe. For many runners, the focus will be on making sure they get the right amount of arch support.
Running shoes are made to absorb the impact of forward motion, but if you plan on being involved in different forms of runnings such as trails where you may need to go sideways for example, look at a cross training shoe instead of a pure running shoe.
Once you find a few shoes that you feel comfortable in, then just have fun choosing from the different designs and colors offered right here on this site. There are so many different styles that you really do have what seems like an endless variety. Just make sure comfort and support are first on your list, followed by style.
