Running is a great way to get fit and lose weight. It's so simple that it doesn't require much skill or cost to start. But when there is bad weather, many runners get bummed out if they can't get their workout in. Solution? Run on a treadmill.

Why run on a treadmill?
Other than the obvious reason that you can run at anytime regardless of the weather outside, running on a treadmill can actually be safer than running outside in certain situations.
For one, treadmills offer a smooth running surface that can be easier on your joints when compared to running outside on hard pavement. Treadmills can also make it easier to calculate your pace and incline. It's fun and challenging to measure your fitness level through stats, and treadmills offer an easy way to do so.
The secret to having a great workout on a treadmill is in being able to vary your intensity. By manually adjusting the incline and speed, or using the preset running programs, you can challenge yourself quite well, which is a great way push yourself to a new level of fitness.
The number one reason many people stop using a treadmill for their running or fitness program is that they just get bored. So in order to combat boredom, watch TV or pop in a good running DVD that will keep you motivated. If you're running on a treadmill at a gym, bring music along to keep you motivated. You can also run with a partner at the gym and motivate each other.
Part of what I love about running is being outdoors in the sunshine and the change of scenery depending on my route, so a treadmill will never completely replace outdoor running, but there are plenty of days (especially in my wintery climate) when it is the best alternative.
